From October 9 to 11, 2019, a training session on risk management for wetlands has been organised in Tirana, Albania for local civil society representatives and natural area managers.
A representative from the Tour du Valat and the Mediterranean Wetlands Observatory has contributed to this event as a trainer. The Albanian NGO INCA (Institute for Nature Conservation in Albania) will lead and organise the session.
For three days in the training room and in the field, participants have learn to identify and become more familiar with different types of wetlands and the various ways to better manage them, as well as the threats they face throughout the Mediterranean Basin, which include pollution, artificialisation and other direct anthropogenic pressures, and invasive species.
This training session has been funded by the Agence Française de Développement (AFD) and the French Global Environment Facility (FFEM), in the framework of the joint project ‘Civil society organisations and wetlands / Sustainable management of wetlands in the Mediterranean,’ which has the following objectives:
- Improve the skills of civil society stakeholders so they can better manage activities linked to the protection, restoration, management, and monitoring of wetlands as well as related communications;
- Strengthen the commitment of civil society to the development of the Mediterranean Wetlands Alliance;
- Develop and officially establish the waterbird census network as a standard regional indicator for monitoring wetlands, as well as for completing communications and awareness-raising operations concerning them.
An initial training course was already organised in Jordan in April 2019 on the topic of wetlands restoration based on water dynamics (find out more), and a second one took place in Turkey in June 2019 on how to set up an advocacy campaign, develop an environmental education programme, and train trainers.
Below you can download a description of this project and of the activities scheduled for 2018-2021.
