The Mediterranean Biodiversity Consortium, represented by the Conservatoire du littoral and Tour du Valat, was in Morocco in March 2024 to support the National Water and Forestry Agency (ANEF) in developing the natural and cultural heritage of the Khenifiss National Park.
Khenifiss National Park (KNP) is one of the pilot sites for the RESCOM project on Nature-based Solutions in the Mediterranean, led by the Consortium and supported by the FFEM and the MAVA Foundation. The activities planned in Morocco will contribute to local development while preserving the park’s unique biodiversity. Located in the south of Morocco, the KNP is characterised by a diversity of ecosystems (coastal strip, lagoon and desert zone) that make up its great natural wealth. A RAMSAR site and Important Bird Area, it is a favoured refuge for many migratory bird species.
On the agenda: a tour of the park’s tourist attractions and workshops with all local partners and users (ANEF, Khenifiss Environnement association, Akhfennir municipality, National Institute for Fisheries Research, fishermen’s cooperatives and salt producers) to consider possible landscape developments and tourist activities to enhance the appeal of this exceptional area between land and sea.
