The Regional Activity Centre for Specially Protected Areas (RAC/SPA) of the Mediterranean Action Plan (UNEP/MAP), in partnership with the FAO/GFCM, IUCN Mediterranean, MedWet, and the Tour du Valat, is piloting the development of a project on the sustainable management of Mediterranean coastal wetlands and lagoons.
The aim of the project is to provide Mediterranean countries with an integrated strategy to conserve and manage their unique coastal biodiversity, promoting the use of aquaculture and fisheries as the basis for restoring habitats, attenuating climate change and enhancing the well-being of local communities. The project also promotes experience sharing for coastal zone development, providing considerable opportunities for partnerships between different countries in order to exchange information, update a joint database on the status of their coastal areas and lagoons, and facilitate decision-making processes.
