GlobWetland II is a Mediterranean region pilot project of the Ramsar Convention on wetlands financed by the European Space Agency. Its main aim is to facilitate the integration of remote sensing in the conservation and management of wetlands by developing a monitoring system for the main coastal wetlands and Ramsar sites in 11 Mediterranean countries, from Morocco to Turkey.
The system will particularly be based on the development of maps and indicators. The Mediterranean Wetlands Observatory, coordinated by the Tour du Valat, is involved together with the 11 countries as both a partner in the preparation of the project and future user.
The results of the mapping and indicators will be presented for 160 wetlands at the 2012 Ramsar COP.
The project was the subject of a 12-minute report on the Euronews television channel (viewable here). Aimed at a general audience, the programme explains the role of satellites as a new knowledge detection instrument for wetlands, contributing to their conservation.
