On Friday June 28, the Tour du Valat celebrated 70 years of commitment and human adventure in the service of wetlands.
Created in 1954 by Luc Hoffmann on the estate of the same name, the Tour du Valat has developed its research activities for the conservation of Mediterranean wetlands with a constant concern: “To better understand wetlands in order to better manage them.”
Originally a biological station dedicated mainly to the study of Camargue birds, over the years it grew into a research center dedicated to the conservation of Mediterranean wetlands, bringing together over a hundred collaborators.
Today, the Tour du Valat is internationally recognized in the field of wetland research and conservation, throughout the Mediterranean basin and beyond.
On this day of celebration, we were honored to welcome Dr Musonda Mumba, Secretary General of the Ramsar Convention, who took part in the round table discussion “Face à l’urgence écologique, Action!” alongside Sébastien Treyer, Director General of Iddri, Ana Rodrigues, Director of Research at CEFE-CNRS and Salathe Tobias, whose book “Les Terres d’eau” has just been published by Éditions Buchet-Chastel.
Moderated by Jean Jalbert, Director of the Tour du Valat, the discussion sparked stimulating and inspiring exchanges looking ahead to future challenges and opportunities.
This anniversary marks 7 decades of research and action for Mediterranean wetlands.
As our President André Hoffmann pointed out, it also symbolizes our renewed commitment to reconciling humanity and nature, for all the years to come.
