Job Description

The “Environmental Integration of Marine Renewable Energies” program is one of the four Research and Development programs of France Energies Marines institute. It aims at advising, sharing expertise and participating in the environmental decision-making concerning the development of MRE, and more especially on offshore wind farm projects planed along the French coasts. Many offshore wind farms are planed to be installed along the French coasts, and this development must be supplemented by studies aiming at acquiring knowledges on marine avifauna and terrestrial migrating avifauna. France Energies Marines builds an expertise on this thematic by coordinating and by scientifically contributing in research programs such as MIGRALION and MIGRATLANE.

The MIGRALION research program (April 2021 – March 2025) aims at characterising the use of the Gulf of Lion (Mediterranean sea, France) by migrating and resident avifauna using complementary approaches. This programs is carried out by 12 structures (research laboratories, associations, public/private structures). It is made up of six different Work Packages, including the WP6 on “Development of combined data analysis methods” led by the Centre d’Ecologie Fonctionnelle et Evolutive (UMR 5175 CEFE, CNRS), France Energies Marines and the Tour du Valat.

Missions

The missions of the postdoctoral researcher will be to:

  • Continue the development of methodologies used to analyse combined data of avifauna;
  • Perform combined analyses of datasets obtained through the other WP of the program (data acquisition);
  • Share and communicate on methodologies developed and on ecological results obtained by writing one or several scientific publications of rank A, and by writing deliverables awaited for WP6 of MIGRALION;
  • Take part in the meetings of MIGRALION (steering committee and process meetings), and also in possible other seminaries/conferences that could be the opportunity to share the results of the WP6.

The postdoctoral research “Combined Modelling of Avifauna Spatial Data” will work under the responsibilities of WP6 leaders, i.e. the Centre d’Ecologie Fonctionnelle et Evolutive (CEFE UMR5175), France Energies Marines and the Tour du Valat. She/He will work within the UMR CEFE (Montpellier, France) in order to benefit from a direct supervision of researchers specialised on statistical modelisation at the CEFE research laboratory. The postdoc will also work in collaboration with the Tour du Valat (an association performing avifauna surveys), an other postdoc also working on MIGRALION (WP3 Telemetry tracking) and other postdocs working on MIGRATLANE on the same research thematic and on similar datasets.

Required Skills

Initial training

Biostatistician/Statistician in Ecology or academic training in Ecology (PhD in biostatistics applied in ecology or PhD in ecology including a key component in statistics).

Work experience

Minimum 3 years in research laboratories, in Research and Development institutes or in study offices, with a high experience in data analysis, and in statistic modelling (in particular on spatialised data).

Specific knowledge

Required:

  • Strong expertise in statistical modelling (in a Bayesian framework); integrated and spatial modelling;
  • Good knowledges on the treatment and analysis of large and complex data sets (here data sets from telemetry tracking, maritime offshore surveys and from radar surveys);
  • Conduct a research project (i.e. writer scientific articles/reports in French/English, respect project deadlines, being a source of proposals);
  • Good knowledges on the biology and ecology of avifauna.

Expected:

  • Good knowledges on marine ecosystem functioning and on megafauna;
  • Good knowledges on Marine Renewable Energy (MRE) sector.

Professional qualities

  • Being autonomous;
  • Scientifically rigorous;
  • Organised;
  • Have good communication skills (writing, speaking);
  • Collaborate with various partners (researchers, study offices, environmental organisations, companies).
