A successful WetNet summer school project in Venice, Italy

The WetNet project [1] organised an international summer school in Caorle and Venice, Italy, from 3 to 7 June, 2019 on ‘The sustainable governance of Mediterranean wetlands–Wetland contracts as voluntary agreements for stakeholder engagement and accountability.’

The training included the participation of 70 experts and/or speakers from six Mediterranean countries (France, Italy, Malta, Portugal, Slovenia, and Spain), who gathered to share their experiences, skills, and points of view on the governance of Mediterranean wetlands.

This summer school targetted many different kinds of participants, such as national and regional decision-makers involved in wetlands management, director generals and technical managers of Mediterranean wetlands, members of international NGOs active in wetlands management, practitioners and researchers involved in wetlands governance, and students with degrees on various topics linked to wetlands management. Four of the participants were from France.

The WetNet project [1] is an Interreg Med [2] project that aims to improve the effectiveness of the conservation policies applicable to protected wetlands in the Mediterranean region.

It evaluates the methodology of wetland contracts in six European Mediterranean countries, and facilitates the dissemination of integration and coordination mechanisms for participative governance in protected wetlands.

The Verdier marshes complex, located within the commune of Le Sambuc in the Camargue, is the pilot site chosen for the project in France. The Tour du Valat works on this project in collaboration with the Verdier Marshes Association.
