Nature based Solutions at the Monaco Ocean Week

During the 5th edition of  the Monaco Ocean Week [1], the Tour du Valat, the IUCN French Committee, the IUCN Centre for Mediterranean Cooperation and the Ocean & Climate Platform organized the conference “Nature-based Solutions to Climate Change in the Mediterranean”, on Friday 25 March 2022 from 11am to 12.30pm in the conference room of the Monaco Yacht Club (Quai Louis II) (full program to download here [2] in French).

The Mediterranean basin is at the crossroads of the fight against biodiversity erosion, adaptation to climate change and development of societies. This event proposes to illustrate, through the interventions of specialists and testimonies of field actors, how Nature-based Solutions can provide concrete and sustainable answers to these challenges.

Raphaël Billé [3], Tour du Valat programme Director, presented

Case study: the lagoons and marshes of the Camargue former saltworks, Nature-based Solutions to coastal risks.

The Tour du Valat is taking concrete action to create a society reconciled with nature that is supportive and respectful of the rest of the living world. In collaboration with various partners, it has been experimenting with this NbS approach for several years on various projects linked to the adaptive management of the coastline in response to rising sea levels [4], management of riparian forests based on passive restoration [5], agroecological projects [6], and interactive tools for water management in marshes [7]. All of these approaches have been devised, implemented, evaluated and capitalised on by Tour du Valat teams and its partners.
