{"id":52493,"date":"2026-09-17T15:13:06","date_gmt":"2026-09-17T13:13:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tourduvalat.org\/uncategorized\/combien-y-a-t-il-de-marmaronette-marbree-nicheuses-au-maroc\/"},"modified":"2026-09-21T15:54:27","modified_gmt":"2026-09-21T13:54:27","slug":"how-many-breeding-marbled-duck-are-there-in-morocco","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tourduvalat.org\/en\/publications-en\/how-many-breeding-marbled-duck-are-there-in-morocco\/","title":{"rendered":"How many breeding Marbled Duck are there in Morocco?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A study published last July in the journal <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Animal Conservation<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> provides the very first <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">national-scale<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> estimate of the breeding population size of the Marbled Teal (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Marmaronetta angustirostris<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">) in Morocco, also known as the Marbled duck.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Conducted by a team bringing together Tour du Valat, \u00c9cole Pratique des Hautes \u00c9tudes, GREPOM\/BirdLife Morocco, the Faculty of Sciences Ben M\u2019sik in Casablanca and BioSph\u00e8re Environnement, this research fills a gap that had previously made it difficult to reliably assess the species\u2019 status in the country and, consequently, to effectively plan its conservation.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">A threatened nomadic species<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559738&quot;:240,&quot;335559739&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Marbled Teal is classified as globally threatened and vulnerable in Europe by the IUCN. Franklin<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">A large-scale field monitoring protocol<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559738&quot;:240,&quot;335559739&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Launched in 2023, this national monitoring programme is based on a two-stage random sampling design: 35 primary units of 100 km\u00b2, within which 187 secondary sampling units of 0.25 km\u00b2 are nested, covering the entire Moroccan territory from the mouth of the Moulouya River in the north to the Saharan wadis in the south. The objective was to estimate the size of the Marbled Teal breeding population and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">identify key breeding habitat features<\/span>.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559738&quot;:240,&quot;335559739&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">A national Marbled Teal population estimated at 386 broods <\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559738&quot;:240,&quot;335559739&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">At the scale of the sampled sites, covering 46.75 km\u00b2 of wetlands, the best model estimated a total of 24 broods, with an <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">average<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> detection probability of 0.71, highlighting the need to account for imperfect detection in field surveys. Extrapolated to all Moroccan wetlands (748 km\u00b2), this estimate corresponds to a national breeding population of 386 broods. The field data were analysed using models designed to correct for biases associated with the species\u2019 imperfect detectability.
