On 5 February 2026, the Mediterranean Wetlands Observatory was honoured to co-organise the policy dialogue \u201cFrom Water Stress to Water Security: Wetlands as a Strategic Asset for the Mediterranean\u201d at the European Parliament,as part of World Wetlands Day.<\/h3>\n

This event took place alongside Wetlands International Europe<\/strong>,\u00a0Fundacion Global Nature <\/strong>and in collaboration with\u00a0MedWet,<\/strong>\u00a0hosted by MEPs\u00a0C\u00e9sar Luena and Jutta Paulus.\u00a0<\/strong>The\u00a0European Commission<\/strong> was also represented, notably by the Commissioner for the Mediterranean, Dubravka \u0160uica, alongside Flore Lafaye de Michaux from the RamsarConvention.<\/p>\n

Mediterranean wetlands are a strategic asset for water security, climate adaptation, and socio-economic stability across the region. Yet, the MWO-3\u00a0regional report<\/a> confirms a persistent and systemic degradation:\u00a0historically,\u00a0more than 56% of natural\u00a0wetlands in the Mediterranean\u00a0countries\u00a0have already been lost, mainly due to land-use conversions\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n

Bringing together EU policymakers, Mediterranean partners, and scientific and policy experts, the event highlighted a clear message:\u00a0wetland loss is not inevitable.<\/strong>\u00a0Where governance frameworks are coherent, ecological water needs are secured, and restoration is adequately financed, wetlands demonstrate measurable recovery and continue to support key sectors such as agriculture, fisheries, and tourism.<\/p>\n

Discussions focused on how key EU policy frameworks, including the Nature Restoration Regulation, the European Water Resilience Strategy, and the Pact for the Mediterranean, can drive large-scale wetland restoration, investment, and stronger EU\u2013Mediterranean cooperation on water resilience and climate adaptation.<\/p>\n

Protecting and\u00a0restoring Mediterranean wetlands is not only a conservation priority : it is a strategic investment in water security, climate resilience, biodiversity, and regional stability.<\/p>\n
