[Video] Civil society organisations across the Mediterranean are taking action to protect wetlands

From 2018 to 2026, the ‘Civil Society Organisations and Wetlands’ project brought together 15 organisations from 11 Mediterranean countries and enabled them to work together to protect wetlands. Together, they have strengthened their capacities, forged lasting links, and promoted the sharing of experiences, knowledge and best practice across the Mediterranean basin.

As Mediterranean wetlands continue to disappear at an alarming rate due to human pressures, particularly in the southern and eastern regions of the basin, the role of local stakeholders is more crucial than ever to the conservation of these habitats.

Implemented across 11 countries and bringing together a total of fifteen CSOs, the ‘Civil Society Organisations and Wetlands’ project has helped to empower stakeholders to take action. As the project reaches its conclusion, we invite you to discover the initiatives led by this network through a video: from the scientific monitoring of waterbirds to the fight against illegal hunting, as well as environmental education and the protection of natural habitats.

Co-ordinated by the Tour du Valat, this project was implemented in partnership with the French Development Agency (AFD). It received support from several institutional and technical partners committed to biodiversity, including the MAVA Foundation for Nature, BirdLife International, the French Ministry for Ecological Transition and the French Biodiversity Agency .
