The Mediterranean Biodiversity Consortium met on 11 and 12 July at the Tour du Valat, in the Camargue, for the first Regional Steering Committee meeting, which also served as the symbolic launch of the RESCOM project. The aim of the meeting was to create the conditions for activities to get underway as quickly as possible and in a coordinated fashion, both at regional level and at the five pilot sites in Albania, Morocco, Montenegro, Tunisia and Turkey.
The RESCOM project strengthens the social and environmental resilience of vulnerable natural areas in the Mediterranean, through the implementation of Nature-based Solutions and an integrated approach at the scale of coastal territories in which several of the most fragile ecosystems are found, all too often treated in ‘silos’ (sea, coasts, forests, small islands and wetlands). The project aims to conserve, restore and improve the ecological functioning and services provided by these ecosystems, by supporting and involving national and local stakeholders and local populations through awareness-raising activities, training and technical assistance. It combines regional activities with very specific actions at five pilot sites in Albania, Morocco, Montenegro, Tunisia and Turkey.
Financed by the French Global Environment Facility (FFEM) and the MAVA Foundation for a period of four years, it is being implemented by the Mediterranean Consortium for Biodiversity (CMB), comprising five organisations: MedWet, Initiative PIM, Association Internationale des Forêts Méditerranéennes, Tour du Valat and IUCN Centre for Mediterranean Cooperation, in partnership with the Conservatoire du Littoral.
