Wetlands: a solution for climate change

As is true of many ecosystems, wetlands have been considerably affected by the climate changes that have occurred over the past several decades and are worsening.

Yet they are a very effective solution for fighting against the negatives effects of climate change via the numerous ecosystem services they provide, such as their capacity to regulate flooding when there are major storms. They also contribute to the adaptive management of the rising sea level via a controlled retreat from the sectors facing erosion, as illustrated in the adaptive management project of the lagoons and marshes of the former Camargue Saltworks site being co-managed by the Tour du Valat (learn more [1]).

That was the subject of the presentation made by Jean Jalbert, who is the General Director of the Tour du Valat, during open day on 4 February 2018 [2], on World Wetlands Day, which commemorates every year the signature of the Ramsar Convention for the protection of wetlands.
