The result of a close collaboration since 2012 between the Wildlife Conservation General Administration (WCGA), the High Commission for the Environment and Natural Resources (HCENR), AAO/Birdlife Tunisia [2], the Sudanese Wildlife Society [3], the University of Sennar, the Wildlife Research Center of Sudan [4], the French Office of Biodiversity [5] and the Tour du Valat [6], this site of nearly 9,500 km² was officially designated as a Ramsar site on 19 July 2022.

Within the framework of the Ressource project [7] coordinated by the FAO and co-funded by the FFEM and the EU, the joint Tour du Valat and Office Français de la Biodiversité team [8] supported its Sudanese partners: Wildlife Conservation General Administration (WCGA) and the High Council for Environment and Natural Resources (HCENR) from field identification to official declaration, through zoning and local and national consultation, to achieve this designation of a new Ramsar site, the 4th in Sudan: the Khor Abu Habil Inner Delta.

This endoreic delta is made up of hundreds of temporary pools that appear during flooding and then dry up in the middle of sand dunes, acacia woods and a desert savannah traversed by nomadic herders.

10 years after the discovery by this French-Sudanese team of this exceptional site for the reception of European migratory waterbirds, this proposal for the creation of a Ramsar area of 9,500 km² was presented to the Sudanese National Ramsar Committee and to all the local representatives who all declared themselves in favor of this designation. These first steps for the designation of the Khor Abu Habil Inner Delta were captured in the field by Alizée Chiappini and Camille Barbé in December 2020. This didactic film on the stages of designation of a Ramsar area was co-financed by the François Sommer Foundation [9] and the Ministry of Ecological Transition.

The film below (directed by Alizée Chiappini and Camille Barbé) is also available in French [10] and Arabic [11].
