The structure of plankton communities can be influenced by environmental variables, such as water quality or physical characteristics of the systems, but also by biotic interactions with other components of the community (predation, competition). The aim of this work is to study the factors that can influence the structure (specific composition and density) of zooplankton communities in Mediterranean shallow systems. For this pourpose, two study areas have been selected, which include permanent and temporary ponds, with a wide range of environmental conditions and anthropogenic pressure. In each sampling station, limnological variables were measured as well as zooplankton samples. To study the biotic interactions, some experiments are planned, mainly to know the effect of invertebrate predation on zooplankton.
The preliminary analysis of data show different results for the two set of lakes, but in general, conductivity, water permanence, macrophyte cover and presence of fish, seem the main environmental factors to explain the structure of zooplankton communities from both systems, and also macroinvertebrates can play an important role when fish are absent.
